Martial Arts Training - Moving Fluidly And Practically

Have you contemplated the surface you train on? Would you practice in the dojo? Would be the floors crafted from wood or cement? Can you practice barefoot or in shoes? Do glide across the floor? Let's make the training a lot more practical....

Martial-Arts Movement -- Do You Glide or Bounce?

Generally, seasoned martial artists glide in their movements across the floor. The heads don't bobble up and down. The head stays level as they move.

This applies to movement forward, backward, in order to either side.

So, are you practicing over a surface where it's not hard to master to glide without bouncing, or do you skid and prevent effortless movement?

Initially, try the smooth surfaces, similar to a dojo or garage in places you train.

Ultimately, build your training more difficult. Add the realism of numerous surfaces.

Typical Surface Provides Martial Complications

My garage where I train filled up with ... stuff. treadmills, beanbag chairs, boxes of books, vinyl records, and so on. This forced us to maneuver to the next room over, for training.

Our new "training facility" is carpeted.

And i also have by no means seen my students given such a problem as smooth movement across wall-to-wall carpeting. It is like they lost their efficiency in a fell swoop. Who have considered that carpeting is the kryptonite of one or two of my students.

The answer was to go back to moving -- practicing shooting forward, fading back, and fast actions to the side -- all without having bouncing the top up and down. All on carpet.

You should try it. It is worth the practice.

A different Challenge to Smooth Martial Movement

If you are planning to kick, then shoes that provide grip are preferred. Certain, it is possible to slide forward superior in shoes with a leather sole, nevertheless, you may also slip very easily onto your tush.

So, a lot of martial artists favor shoes with rubber soles. It seems sensible.

The problem is that on a smooth floor, they have a tendency to stick. And it's the stickiness from the rubber tread that ... causes that head to start off bobbing again.

You should make practicing on different surfaces and wearing diverse shoes (barefoot, too) a part of your regular training. Learn how to move being a martial artist. There are several causes to not bounce while you move.

In your efficient martial movement!
